    31st Oct- 4 Nov 2022 Genome-resolved metagenomics bioinformatics course, Online

    HoloFood partners at EMBL-EBI are teaching on the upcoming Genome resolved metagenomics bionformatics course this fall!

    Learn about the tools, processes and analysis approaches used in the field of genome-resolved metagenomics. 

    This course will cover the use of publicly available resources to manage, share, analyse and interpret metagenomics data, focussing primarily on assembly-based approaches. The virtually-delivered content will involve participants learning via pre- recored lectures and live presentations, followed  by live Q & As with the trainers. Practical experience will be developed in group activities and in computational exercises run using containerised tools on our virtual training infrastructure.

    14th Aug - 19 Aug 2022 ISME 18th International Symposium of microbial ecology, Lausanne, Switzerland 

    HoloFood researchers Varsha Kale and Germana Baldi from EMBL-EBI will be presenting posters at the upcoming International Symposium of Microbial ecology (ISME) in Switzerland this August. They will share their results so far on their work on both chicken and salmon shotgun metagenomic analysis. You will be able to see their posters in the 'Microbial Ecology session'

    May 4th, 2022 Life Science Across the Globe (LSAG)- virtual

    HoloFood partner Rob Finn (EMBL-EBI) was a guest speaker at the virtual Life Science Across the Globe event where he also presented the hologenomic approach utilised within HoloFood for sustainable aquaculture practices and feeding solutions in salmon farming.

    April 11th-12th, 2022 Congress on Gastrointestinal Function

    HoloFood Scientific Manager Associate Professor Antton Alberdi, from the Center of Evolutionary HoloGenomics, University of Copenhagen gave an invited talk at the 2022 Congress on Gastrointestinal Function virtually. His talk was on "Unveiling the impact of host-microbiota interactions on animal biology through hologenomics."

    November 18th-20th, 2021 DVG Vet Congress, Berlin

    HoloFood PhD candidate Yada Duangnumsawang from Freie Universität Berlin is presenting a poster at the DVG Vet Congress in Berlin. Her poster is entitled "The effects of age, gender, breed and feed additives on ileal histomorphology and gene expression of broilers" and will cover her work on the chicken component of the HoloFood project.

    October 12th-16th, 2021 European Multicolloquium of Parasitology, Belgrade, Serbia

     Postdoctoral researcher Jaelle Brealey from NTNU gave an invited talk entitled "Microbiome inception: an intestinal cestode causes a hierarchical landscape of distinct microbial communities nested within the host", covering her work on the salmon component of the HoloFood project.

    October 4th-7th, 2021 Aquaculture Europe 2021, Madeira, Portugal

    Researchers from the HoloFood project gave presentations and posters at the Aquaculture  Europe conference in Madeira. Postdoctoral researcher Jaelle Brealey from NTNU presented "Microbiome inception: an intestinal cestode causes a hierarchical landscape of distinct microbial communities nested within farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmon salar)". Also presenting was  the scientific manager for HoloFood Morten Limborg on "Applied HoloGenomics : Leveraging Microbiota Services through holo-omic analyses in farmed fish".

    September 9th-11th 2021, 2021, ESVCN Congress (Virtual Event)

    PhD candidate Yada Duangnumsawang from Freie Universität Berlin, had the opportunity to give an online presentation at the 25th anniversary of the ESVCN conference held virtually. Her talk was on her work on the poultry component of HoloFood, specifically "The effects of age, gender, breed and feed additives on ileal histomorphology and gene expression of broilers".

    23rd June 2021 - Symposium HUPLANTcontrol. & MicrobiomeSupport (Virtual event)

    HoloFood communication manager Anna Fotakis presented the HoloFood project, including recent highlights and milestones alongside researchers from the three other "sister" projects - SIMBA, MASTER and Circles.  The presentations were streamed live.

    ´7th-11th June 2021 - Holistic Bioinformatic Approaches used in Microbiome Research (Virtual event)

    HoloFood researcher Varsha Kale (EMBL-EBI) will be presenting a poster at the Holistic Bioinformatic Approaches used in Microbiome Research event organised by the Bioinformatics Virtual Coordination Network (BVCN). Her poster will present the latest work on the workflows and results of the microbiome analysis and genome catalogue from the HoloFood research datasets.

    22nd April 2021 - Bioinformatics for BioBusiness (B4BB) (Virtual event)

    EMBL-EBI leader Rob Finn presented at the Bioinformatics for BioBusiness (B4BB) where amongst many things he also mentioned the HoloFood database under preparation and the resource of generating such large datasets for enabling SMEs to harness the power of big data. The event was jointly hosted by EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute and Medicines Discovery Catapult to promote the power of bioinformatics in driving the success across the life science business sectors.

    24th-25th March 2021 - Animal Microbiome Congress 2021 (Virtual event)

    4th - 6th of November 2019 - Symposium on Gut Health in Production of Food Animals (St Louis, Missouri, USA) 

    HoloFood partners will be presenting a poster at the upcoming Symposium on Gut Health in Production of Food Animals in St Louis Missouri.

    "The aim of the meeting is to discuss the role of good health in animal production and the dynamic and essential role the gut plays in it. The symposium will include all species in animal agriculture and cover different aspects of the gut and important factors in gut health maintenance and disease.  The symposium offers an opportunity to engage in scientific discussions and exchange opinions with university, government and industry researchers." 

    25-26 September 2019 - European Research and Innovation Days (Brussels, Belgium)

    HoloFood will be presenting its research to the public during the EXPO Science is Wonderful! on the 25 and 26 September 2019 at the Kanal in Brussels, Belgium.

    Free and open to everybody, Science is Wonderful! brings the world of science to the public. From a microbiome research for sustainable food solutions like HoloFood, to down global warming, facilitating human life in space and so much more… it’s all part of the variety of activities schools, families and young people can discover at the event. Through hands-on experiments, live demonstrations, face-to-face chats with researchers, Science is Wonderful! shows how science impacts our daily lives.

    With a mounting success and a rising number of visitors (over 5 000 in 2018), Science is Wonderful! has become the flagship event to highlight EU funded research by showcasing researchers and their projects to the wider public and in particular to pupils.

    On World Microbiome Day we celebrate all things microbe, all around the world and we introduce international microbiome researchers to the public to raise awareness of the vibrant and diverse world of microbes. This year's theme is the fight against antibiotic resistance.

    June 10th -13th 2019 HoloFood representation at the 22nd European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (Gdańsk, Poland)

    Partners from HoloFood will attend and present their work within HoloFood at the upcoming European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition (ESPN) in Gdańk, Poland. 


    "These meetings, held every two years, are the most significant forum for the exchange of information on and discussion of poultry nutrition issues in Europe, and are one of the most influential gatherings of their kind in the word. Therefore, the 22nd ESPN provides a unique opportunity to present scientific and technical achievements in poultry nutrition and their translation into practice. Attendees at the Symposium will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the most recent advances in poultry nutrition, and they will be able to share and discuss their views with colleagues."

    EMBL-EBI with the support of HoloFood is running a Metagenomics Bioinformatics course. 


    This course will cover the use of publicly available resources to manage, share, analyse and interpret metagenomics data, including marker gene, whole gene shotgun (WGS) and assembly-based approaches. Delegates will gain hands-on experience using a range of data resources and tools, interspersed with lectures. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing researchers in the field.
